Wikipedia Fake News Solution

The co-founder of Wikipedia, Jimmy Wales, is launching a new online ad-free publication that aims to combat fake news.  The project, Wikitribune, will bring together professional journalists and a community of interested readers to produce and publish news stories.  The site will focus on evidence based journalism with transparency and professionalism as a mandate.

Our take

With recent controversy over reported Fake News on Facebook, Google’s Brand Safety headache and Fairfax’s job cut announcements threatening editorial staff, this launch is ideally positioned to capitalise on the public’s distrust of news stories and attract supporters who believe in good journalism delivered via a trusted platform. Without an ad funding business model, the success of the platform will rely on journalism that is differentiated and of sufficient quality to attract paid subscribers at scale.
