Regional switching channels

A seismic shift is coming to regional television on July 1 when new TV affiliation deals begin. The privately held WIN Television – which has been the Nine regional affiliate for the last 30+ years – will switch to Ten programming, while the majority of Southern Cross Regional TV stations will rebrand as Nine.

Our take

Industry change is coming particularly in sales representation & systems overhaul. One issue that may lose steam is media ownership reform. Nine’s new deal with Southern Cross is arguably a better outcome then the mooted merger & with the courts saying that live streaming into regional areas is not “broadcast”, there is now less incentive for metro networks to merge with regional affiliates. Regional content, like local news, is now under even greater pressure. The call for media reform may cool for metro but it could be a greater political hot topic in regional Australia.
