Optus to become a multimedia company

Optus has secured a $50M deal for all live match rights for the EPL stripping broadcast rights from Fox Sports. This comes off the back of a 3 year commercial deal with Cricket Australia for the live streaming of games and additional content on mobile.

Our take

This mirrors the move of most communications companies to be content led businesses. Rights for all screens are smart as we move as an industry to demanding cross platform audiences and data. Seven West Media has this covered with the tennis, and most impressively the Olympics. However, as a FTA broadcaster, it is an accessible experience for all fans. But we are not yet connected at scale in our living rooms, so in the short term, if the only option for EPL fans for the big screen experience is Fetch TV, there may be backlash.
