Mainstream is coming for E-sports

Last Sunday, Video game developer Blizzard, teamed up with Seven to broadcast the Sydney leg of the Overwatch World Cup live! This broadcast was a first for commercial TV in Australia and is a major step towards e-sports becoming mainstream in this country.
Seven began making inroads into the e-sports and gaming space in June with the launch of their “screenPLAY” program boasting popular gaming talent. The program, with St. George as foundation partner is available on broadcast TV as well as online, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram and Twitch.

Our take

In the US, Big-brands are flocking to competitive gaming, attracted by a scene that captivates young viewers. In Australia, St. George’s entry into the space marks a shift for big brands and is indicative of how the landscape is changing. St. George has cleverly targeted the growing segment by not only creating relevant content, but worked to drive action via a tailored offer.
