IKEA tests interactive VR kitchen experience

This week IKEA launched its pilot virtual reality (VR) experience “IKEA VR Experience” using a HTC Vive headset. Once you put the headset on, it’s possible to enjoy walking around and interacting with elements of the kitchen while instantly changing its look and feel by selecting different material finishes. IKEA see VR as playing a major role in the future of their customers.

Our take

As a company that has experience in exploring new technology as a way to improve its offering and empower customers, it is interesting to observe how IKEA introduce and test technology. It is apparent they are pretotyping the concept by limiting it to only three kitchen settings, thus simplifying the idea and gaining valuable consumer feedback to identify implications of the technology. This is all in an effort to validate the premise “If we build it, they will use it”.
