Gaming is now a full fledged spectator sport. The trend is racing exponentially and with it a growing audience of vicarious gamers. People are engaging with online gaming/eSports 90% more than last year with an insatiable appetite for behind the scenes content and chat interaction on game strategy. 43m watched the last League of Legends final. The biggest tournament, Intel Extreme Masters, at Sydney’s Olympic Park was packed with 10,000+ gamers.

Our take

In line with our 2017 Trend “Enhanced Worlds”, we’re dubbing this the “Gogglebox of gaming”. As millenials embrace new forms of entertainment, brands need to grasp the gaming opportunity to connect with this highly engaged and influential market. For marketers there are now signage, ambassador, product placement and jersey opportunities just as there are in traditional sports.
