Facebook to intro video profiles

Facebook are introducing their first major updates to user profiles in 5 years, with the intention to allow users more customisability in how they represent themselves online. Notable changes include having a 7 second video as a profile pic, and a mobile-first design for mobile devices.

Our take

To ensure it remains the go-to place for users’ online presence, Facebook needs to remain relevant, and allow users to ‘curate’ their profiles, rather than simply display them. But there are further benefits than just to users. After the last profile updates in 2010, Facebook saw a huge influx of updated user information, in turn giving them more accurate data. So whilst to a Facebook user it may seem to be simply a visual design update, the addition of new features will result in better accuracy for advertisers using Facebook to reach out to relevant audiences. Win-win!
