Content rights holders watching Periscope


Twitter’s latest acquisition Periscope allows anyone to live stream video in real time via their feed. It is quickly growing scale but in the wake of users broadcasting the season premiere of Game of Thrones via Periscope, copyright holders are concerned about the impact social streaming services have on their IP. Twitter is not currently monitoring for copyright infringements, rather relying on other Periscope users to report such activity.

Our take

Rights holders need to protect the value of their content by accounting for social streaming in their commercial deals. But they should also embrace Periscope’s greatest strength – delivering different perspectives. Producers, events, sports etc can use this insight and build a new experience or perspective of their content via social streaming & give users a valuable “official” stream that they can watch… or even contribute to.
