CBS All Access is coming to Australia

Network Ten’s parent company has announced it will launch its streaming video on demand service in Australia by the end of 2018. Chief Executive Leslie Moonves told investors that they will leverage the acquisition of Ten as a gateway to launch CBS All Access by the end of the year.
CBS All Access has just launched in Canada in April 2018, marking the first territory in CBS’ push to expand the platform beyond the U.S. At the Deutsche Bank Media & Telecom Conference in March, COO Joseph Ianniello announced Australia would follow as the second market for CBS All Access expansion. “Wherever Netflix is, I don’t see why we won’t be there,” Ianniello said, referring to CBS All Access’ international ambitions of achieving 8 million subscribers by 2020.

Our take

CBS All Access could play an important role in Australia, despite many of the rights for existing content being sold to local peers. CBS has an existing contract for its Showtime content with local SVOD service Stan, which is 50-50 owned by Nine Entertainment and Fairfax Media. This sees an opportunity for CBS to evolve their content offering which we’ve already seen by CBS studios International President Armando Nunez announcing similar content “already being monetised, like the Star Trek franchise through Netflix”. The streaming space is quickly becoming a competitive market and whilst the FTA players are the only services that allow commercial opportunities (with the exception of Foxtel Go), it will be interesting to see how the emergence of CBS All Access will impact the Australian market and what Ten and CBS’ multi-platform distribution will look like. We suspect CBS will follow the subscription model they have launched overseas, but it will be interesting to see how it impacts TenPlay and if they will work together or if the All Access platform will absorb it.
