Amazon Prime to launch in Australia?

In a recent acquisition, Stan has secured exclusive streaming rights to a number of US shows, including Emmy award winning Amazon originals ‘Transparent’ and ‘Mozart in the Jungle’. Missing from the acquisition was Amazon series ‘The Grand Tour’ – the new car show starring former ‘Top Gear’ hosts.

Our take

The highly anticipated ‘The Grand Tour’ is being closely guarded by Amazon, and the rights not being sold to Stan has increased speculation that Amazon is close to launching a local version of their own streaming service.

Recent announcements are already heralding change for the Australian streaming landscape. Come 2017, Presto will be discontinued as a standalone service (folded into Foxtel Play) and more recently, there is news of a potential ABC-Netflix content partnership. With market disruption on the cards, it could be the right time for a new player to enter the game.
